Hi, I’m Jacquelyn Chanchal, and I've been with APEXA as a Document Validation Specialist since January 2020.

My journey to APEXA

My career is rooted in the insurance industry, which I joined after my arrival to Canada in 1985. I started out at Citadel as a mail clerk. From that position, I moved to the financial department processing insurance premiums. Eventually, North American Life bought our division Affinity Markets and then we were acquired by Manulife. Over that period, I moved around within the administrative department – supporting life, accident, and sickness insurance. There, I handled changes required for policyholder accounts including the updating and cancelling of banking information, as well as other necessary edits. I was eventually promoted to team lead and later supervisor. While in that position, I travelled twice to the Philippines to set up and coach new administration teams.

Through a colleague, I heard that APEXA was recruiting. Before submitting my application, I did some research into the company, learning about how APEXA had set out to transform contracting in the life insurance industry. Given my background working with advisor’s information, I immediately saw the value of APEXA. I sent in my application, interviewed with the team and I’ve been here ever since! I would describe my professional life as gratifying. In the past, I’ve done some travelling where I always meet new people. And now, I work in a software company that is all about helping the industry by digitizing it. There’s never a dull moment!

What I do in APEXA

At APEXA, I make sure that our clients’ information is accurate. Additionally, I assist with updating the user manual, document validation tip sheet, and other materials that guide our validation processes. No two workdays are the same. The variety keeps me on my toes and ensure that I employ all my attention as I focus on each detail.

As a document validation specialist, here’s a sample of my typical 8am to 4pm workday:

  • I wake up at 6am.
  • I open my laptop and log into APEXA at 7:30am.
  • I check my emails for any urgent issues.
  • I write up my daily report and share with all stakeholders.
  • I check the schedule of the document validation team’s daily tasks and start working on tasks assigned to me.
  • I break for lunch at 11:30am.
  • I work on and complete my tasks for the day.
  • Intermittently, I check in on my team members to see if they need some support.
As my career at APEXA progresses, I would like to start speaking directly to our clients so that I can offer support in a more efficient manner.

My go-to productivity trick

Listening to smooth jazz as I drink my first cup of coffee is the best start to my day. I also like to charge up my positivity by sharing my already cheery personality with the rest of my team. So, I send a quick hello to everyone via Teams. I like being a bright light to people.

My dream skill

I have an eye for fashion but have never ventured into the industry professionally. Therefore, a dream skill that I would love to have, is the ability to create fashion for celebrities.

Away from work, you can find me here

…travelling! I’ve been on five cruises to Europe and the Caribbean. If I could combine work with travel, I would absolutely go for it because, as a nosy person, I like exploring and being immersed in the different cultures until I start to feel like I belong there.

When I’m not travelling, I have a few other hobbies such as dancing. Currently, I’m learning salsa and bachata and I cannot wait to be able to move like the best of them. In the summer and fall months, I enjoy socializing with friends outdoors at restaurants, bars, and music shows. Once winter sets in, when I’m not spending time with family up north, I can be found binge-watching some of my favourite tv shows – The Big Bang Theory, Law and Order, and Girlfriends. Did I forget to mention I’m also a grandma? I love spending time with my 2-year-old granddaughter.
